Member Education is a key component of keeping our membership ahead of the game re: rights, skills and power as writers. This includes contract language and grievance handling for members, regular workshops and seminars on everything from finding an agent to marketing your work to self-publishing.
Community of Writers. As a freelance writer you may work individually, but you’re not alone. Our community of more than 1,300 freelance writers is a major benefit. From advice on how to better market your writing, to tips on negotiating contracts, to job leads, members share experiences and expertise at events and membership meetings at the chapter level and through genre-specific e-mail discussion lists. Writer Resources & Publications. NWU’s Journalism, Book and BizTech divisions work to improve economic conditions of writers by taking action on issues relevant to those genres. NWU provides resources for writer advancement and empowerment, spearhead innovative organizing campaigns, and improve contract standards.

Press Passes. You might be a freelance journalist, but that doesn’t mean you have to be scooped by staff reporters. NWU certifies that members are working journalists by issuing a press credential. (Visit our web site and click on “Tools & Resources: Members Only” on our web site.) An NWU press pass is laminated, bears your photograph, and will allow you to gain access to important events.
